How to save on Eskom electricity bills

Small changes can lead to major savings. But before you start being power smart, you need to know how much energy you’re using.

According to Eskom, your household power is used in the following ways:

  • Cold storage 5%
  • Space heating 16%
  • Laundry 3%
  • Stove and oven 7%
  • Lights 6%
  • Geyser 39%
  • Pool pump 11%
  • Other 12%

Here are a few simple ways to shave your electricity bill:

Your geyser

Reduce your geyser temperature to 60% and switch it off before you leave for work. Switch it back on again when you go to bed. For bigger savings, insulate your water pipes and wrap your geyser in a geyser blanket. If you can afford it, install a solar water heater or heat pump to cut your water heating costs buy up to 67%.

Your heating

Dress for the weather and snuggle up under blankets instead of using a heater. If you must use a heater, choose one that uses gas instead of electricity. Electric blankets also use very little electricity. Only use heating in the room you and your family are going to spend time in. Insulating your roof prevents heat loss and can make your home up to 5°C warmer in winter.



Your lights

A simple way to cut costs is to switch off lights in rooms you don’t need them to be on. According to Eskom, normal light bulbs will soon be banned in South Africa and be replaced by compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). CFLs are available in South Africa, so start replacing your light bulbs.

If you’re improving your home, installing energy-efficient downlights or light-emitting diode (LED) lights could save you up to 80% of your lighting costs. These lights also last up to 8 times longer than traditional bulbs. Instead of leaving outside safety lights on all night, install movement sensors and use solar-powered lights in your garden when entertaining.

Your appliances

Some appliances can use up to 50% in standby mode, so switch them off when you’re not using them. This includes your TV, DVD player, home entertainment system and computer.

Your kitchen

Use the right appliance for the right task. For example, use your toaster to make toast instead of your oven. When cooking in your oven, keep the door closed until the food is done. Opening the door too often lets heat escape, causing your oven to work harder to reheat itself.

Make sure your heating plates are also clean and that the pan or pot you’re using is the right size. That way all the energy will be used to cook the food. Use a pressure cooker if you have one. They use very little electricity when cooking foods with longer cooking times, such as stews, pot roasts or steamed puddings.




When using your kettle, only boil as much water as you need. Only use your dishwasher when it’s full, switch it off before the dry cycle starts and dry it by hand.

Your laundry

Wash a full load. A washing machine uses the same amount of power for a single item as it does for one. Reduce the water temperature from 90°C to 60°C when you wash linen. Skip the pre-wash cycle for clothes that aren’t very dirty. Hang your clothes outside instead of using the tumble dryer.

Your pool pump

Reduce the amount of time your pool pump runs for and keep it running outside morning or evening peak times. Clean your filters regularly so your system operates at its best. A pool cover will help keep your pool cleaner for longer and keep your pool warmer in winter.
